PIP (Personal Injury Protection) Coverage |
|
Pays: Medical expenses, 80% of loss of earnings and necessary caregiver services you can't perform as a result of an automobile accident. Covers: You, your family members and your passengers. You are automatically covered under PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage if you did not reject this coverage in writing. You should be paying a premium for this coverage and if not listed on your policy declarations page, and you choose to have this coverage, contact your insurance company or Agent. This coverage pays for medical expenses, 80% of loss of wages from employment and necessary caregiver services that you cant perform as a result of the accident. An example of necessary services would be a maid to do housework or someone hired to do lawn services. This is a no-fault coverage and is paid whether you were the responsible party for the accident or not. All the medical bills and loss of earnings must be documented from the provider and the employer and sent to your insurance company. There are stated limits for this coverage and will be listed on your policy declarations page. The common limits are usually $2500 per person, $5,000 per person and even up to $10,000 per person but check your declarations page for your specific limits. (See PIP claims) An insurance company must offer you $2500 in PIP, but you can buy more. If you don't want PIP, you must reject it in writing. The PIP limits are not automatically paid and only the documented and supported amount of medical bills, 80% of loss of earnings and necessary caregiver services will be considered for payment. Receipts for medical expenses and necessary services are the best supporting documents. Your employer will be sent a wage and salary verification form. |
