Uninsured motorist coverage works just like the liability part of your policy but is designed to provide coverage for your insured vehicle and any injuries to you and your passengers. This coverage is provided by your insurance company.

There are certain requirements in order to file an uninsured motorist claim. Firstly, there must have been actual contact with another vehicle. Secondly, it must be determined by your Claims Adjuster that liability for the accident was adverse to the other party. Thirdly, the accident must have been reported promptly to the police with a report on file. Lastly, it must be determined by your Claims Adjuster that the other party did not have any insurance. This will include support documentation. If the police did not respond to the accident, you should go to your local police department and file a Blue Form. This is a simple report that substitutes the police report and is a documentation of the accident.

If your vehicle was a total loss the insurance company will execute a release for you to sign before they will settle your property damage claim. In addition, a release will also be required for the settlement of any injury claims. This releases your insurance company from any future exposure.
